Read more10 Things I Learned From Our #BreakTheMold Campaign
Our #BreakTheMold campaign was born back in March, out of my personal desire to celebrate inspiring women everywhere, and give voice to their powerful ideas. Over the past seven months, we’ve conducted 21 interviews with women ranging from Olympic athletes, to stay-at-home moms, to other female founders in San Francisco I’m proud to call friends.
I’ve learned a lot—and I hope you have, too—from these women’s personal and emotional stories. As I read back through these interviews (and as this campaign of ours comes to a close), I wanted to compile the ten things that really stuck with me after our #BreakTheMold campaign.
1. If you see an opening, take it.
“I knew that the landscape was mine for the taking and that if I didn’t step up to the plate, who would?” — Kara Goldin, CEO of Hint Water
2. You have to speak your mind to make real change.
“I always speak my mind, no matter the situation. Change doesn't come from staying quiet.” — Dagne Dover’s Founding Team
3. Today is the right time to take risks—not tomorrow!
“I always say that when you’re young is the perfect time to take risks.” — Tiffany Shlain, Filmmaker
4. It’s our job to inspire future generations of female leaders.
“I was determined to push the sport, to prove that it is possible for women to do the same tricks as men, and in that way, to show young girls that the sky’s the limit. To learn these tricks, I had to #BreakTheMold.” — Heather McPhie, Olympian
5. You shouldn’t get intimidated by uncertainty—you should use it to your advantage.
“A certain amount of career uncertainty is normal. Don’t just tolerate it; learn how to thrive on it!” — Sarah LaFleur, Founder of MM.LaFleur
6. ThirdLove bras help moms stay comfortable all day!
“ThirdLove makes the first bras I can wear all day and not get headaches from. As a mom who’s running around chasing my kids all day or standing at work, it’s important for me to be comfortable, feel confident, and be supported.” — Becky Dugan
7. You can be a mom and a founder.
“Don't let anyone tell you you can't be a mom and do what you love. There are many different roads to success.” — Jessica Davis, Founder of Nest Studio
8. We all need to stop being so hard on ourselves!
“Forgive yourself if you think you’re screwing it up, and just keeping trying to do better.” — Hannah Kellogg on motherhood
9. Breaking the Mold comes in all forms—including how we raise our children.
“I #BreakTheMold by embracing the responsibility of teaching my children how to be true to themselves, and bring up respectful men who see no lines drawn, no boundaries between race, gender, social classes, or religious beliefs.” — Becky Dugan
10. We, as women, get to decide what works best for us.
Lastly, I had to include a point from my own #BreakTheMold interview, about defining our roles as women and as mothers:
“I tune out most of the ‘advice’ about success. There are a lot of people who want to tell women how they should balance it all, but I have to make those decisions for myself. I alone define how to juggle my family and career.”
