Read moreA Summer Travel City Guide to Rome
As part of our summer travel series, today we're joined by Katie Williams, a blogger at Traveling Spud, who has spent the last year traveling the globe. Today, she is sharing her favorite spots for a sunny, summer weekend getaway in Rome, Italy!
Rome is a bustling city with a beautiful mix of grunge, history, passion, and fashion. The foundation of the city is one of the oldest in the world and the thriving culture makes it an exciting city to visit. If you have a long layover or are traveling through for you a weekend, here are the top things to explore.
1. The Trastevere District.
This neighborhood is one of the most picturesque and hip places in Rome. There are outdoor, canopied restaurants on every corner, incredible 2nd hand shops and colorful buildings lining the streets. If you can walk around during the day you’ll have wonderful photo opportunities, and at night you’ll see the city come alive! Eat some of the best pizza you’ll ever have at Dar Poeta.
2. Visit the Pantheon and eat lunch (or dinner) at Osteria Del Sostegno.
The Pantheon is a must-visit spot while in Rome. It only takes a quick second to walk through it, but it’s a spectacular site to see. Surrounding the Pantheon are touristy restaurants, but hiding just next to the Pantheon in an alleyway is a local’s secret spot. Go to Osteria Del Sostegno for some of the best pasta and house wine you might have your entire visit in Rome!
3. Vatican City.
I don’t think it’s a visit to Rome without visiting the Vatican. You can also check off another country off your list, since the Vatican is its own country! I recommend a guided tour through the Vatican to get the most out of it because it’s so large. If you want to go with fewer tourists, book the night tour like we did, but make sure you see the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Cathedral! If you’re there on Wednesday and Sunday you can even see the Pope.
4. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and lunch at Ensalata Ricca.
Visit Piazza Navona to see Bernini’s beautiful fountain—also called the Fountain of the Four Rivers. It’s much less touristy than the Trevi Fountain and almost more enjoyable! Have a great salad at Ensalata Ricca to take a break from all the pasta.
5. The Colosseum and Palentine.
When in Rome you must visit one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the Colosseum, and Palentine Hill. Step back in time and enjoy the views and marvel at the amazing architecture constructed so long ago.
6. Eat Gelato at Gelateria Frigidarium Roma.
The best part about Italy is that there is gelato on every corner. You also can almost never go wrong with any of them. However, if you want the cream of the crop, get in line at Gelateria Frigidarium Roma. You will not be disappointed.
7. Trevi Fountain.
It’s one of the most visited spots in Rome and the crowds are insane, even at midnight! But, the Trevi Fountain is absolutely a must-visit destination when in Rome.
This post is part of a summer travel series, where we'll be exploring destinations around the United States (and world) in the coming weeks and months.
