How to Store Your Bras At Home and On the Road

‘Tis the season for weekend getaways! But before you jet off to your next destination, do you know how to properly store your bras, both at home and on the road? Instead of shoving your favorite bra into a weekender bag (only for it to get ruined underneath your new sandals and heavy toiletries), consider these tips for how to protect your bras both at home and on the road.

First things first: you need a bra drawer!

Odds are you probably have a dresser drawer devoted solely to your bras and underwear at home. If so, great! Step one is done. If not, dedicate a lazy Saturday afternoon to finally clearing out all of those old, ratty college t-shirts and making room for a real, adult underwear drawer. Trust us—your bras will breathe a heavy sigh of relief when they’re no longer shoved underneath that old t-shirt.

Bras need room to breathe

The best thing for bras is space. Bras should be stored standing up in a drawer with the cups inside of each other to help them hold their shape—and never folded or crumpled. Some women prefer to leave their bras free-standing in their drawer, while others prefer bra boxes or drawer organizers (that you can easily pick up at stores like The Container Store) to separate bras and help them stand up straight—when they might not want to on their own. Whichever you prefer, just remember to give your bras as much space as possible.

Organize by color

To make it easier to find your favorite bra in the perfect shade each morning, consider color coordinating both your bras and underwear from lightest to darkest. Not only will this help keep you more organized, but it will also prevent the colors from rubbing off on each other.

Be gentle!

Whether you’re at home or on-the-go, the golden rule of extending the lifetime of your bras is to be gentle with them. Bras are delicate garments and deserve to be treated with care and caution, so treat them well and it will pay off in the long run.

While on the road, maintaining shape is key

When you’re traveling, try to maintain the same bra commandments that you would at home—don’t fold your bras, lay them out in a drawer as soon as you get to your hotel, and be as gentle as possible. When you’re packing, keep one last thing in mind: maintaining shape is key. If you lay your bras flat, nested inside one another, that should do the trick—but consider putting balls of socks inside each cup to ensure they don’t get smushed in transit.
